Piracy The word privateer conjures a romantic mental image in the minds of most Americans. Tales of battle and bounty pervade the folklore of privateering, which has tempered about a cherished, if often overlooked part of our divided heritage. Legends were uncollectible during the battle for American independence, and these men were understandably canonized as part of the formation of our national identity. The fact of the consequence is that the wide majority of these men were normal opportunists, if noteworthy nautical warriors.
